Architecture and Symbolism

In addition to its vibrant community, Eden UCC is also blessed with a beautiful building filled with important religious references.

The architectural style of Eden church is Gothic.   The Gothic form of high, pointed arches suggests aspiration and a feeling of reaching upwards, which symbolizes our attitude of worship.  This symbolism can be found throughout the church:

  • Outside, just below the tower
  • Outside on the Porch Openings
  • The Grill work of the Organ
  • The Ceiling lights of the Sanctuary
  • On the Pew ends and Rail Front

On the glass panels that line the entry to the main sanctuary, there are a series of symbols.

As worshipers come into Eden Church's main sanctuary, they see...

The Rose Window:  A massive circle, it has no beginning and no end, symbolizing the eternal nature of God and life.  This beautiful window was made part of the structure of Eden Church in a remodeling project following a fire in that section of the Church in 1941.  This was a gift from one of the old and faithful families of Eden congregation.

Numbers and other figures in the window are symbolic:
3: The Holy Trinity (on the outer edge of the circle)

12: There were twelve sons of Jacob, Twelve tribes of Israel,Twelve disciples (sections outside the hub of the circle).

4: There are four Gospels, four corners of the earth to which the Gospel reaches (sections inside the hub of the circle).
Wheat and grapes: Symbols of the raw elements of the Lord's Supper.
Cross Fleury: A type of cross with four arms of equal length and pointed, petal-like ends.

The Church Tower: Massive and sturdy in appearance, it calls to mind the name of God, who is a strong tower (Proverbs 18:10) to whom we come for refuge and strength.

The Church Bells:
These call the worshipers to come and give the worship and adoration that are due God.

The Church Stairs: These signify the Christian pilgrimage, the pathway of the Christian who seeks to worship God and learn his ways.

The Church Door: Jesus said, "I am the door" (John 10:9).  These divided doors make reference to the natures of Christ, divine and human.  They invite everyone to enter to worship and depart to serve.

The Altar: This is symbolic of Christ's sacrificial death.  It is the throne of God in His house.  When shaped and located as a table (as ours is), it reminds the worshiper of the table in the Upper Room when the Lord's Supper was instituted.  On the altar are carved the words "In remembrance of Me."  Also on the face of the Table are carved the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, Alpha and Omega, symbolic of Christ, "the first and the last, the beginning and the end" (Revelation 22:13).

The Baptismal Fount: This symbol of the Church's belief in the sacrament of Holy Baptism was imported from Italy and given by a family of the church many years ago.  It is a stone angel, mounted on a four-sided base and holding the water bowl in her hands.   The angel leads us to recall that "there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents" (Luke 15:10).  The four-sided base speaks of people coming from four directions:  "And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at the table in the kingdom of God" (Luke 13:29).

The Pulpit: It is used for the application and exposition of the Word of God.  Its octagon shape symbolizes the regenerating power of God's word, which is transmitted through the personality of the minister.

The Lectern:
It stands as a single appointment for the reading of the Scriptures.
